Flyers

Here is a flyer we’re passing out against the school to prison pipeline: Destroy the School to Prison Pipeline.  This is a collaboration with several other groups and individuals who are coming together to organize in coalition.

There is also this flyer we made that includes some more specific and controversial steps we want to encourage people to take to disrupt the school to prison pipeline AND the pipelines from private schools to privileged managerial positions.

Past flyers:

-Here is a flyer we  passed out to members of the NOVA community regarding use of the Horace Mann building in the Central District.

-Here is an UPDATED version of the flyer that is two-sided and encourages folks to come to the Michelle Rhee Picket

If you distribute to a school, please email us at CreativityNotControl@gmail.com so that we can know that school has been covered.  Thanks!

Here is the text of the new side of the flyer:

What’s Behind Standardized Tests?
Standardized testing is part of a larger effort to USE SCHOOLS TO ADVANCE THE CURRENT SYSTEM OF RACISM AND INCOME INEQUALITY
Michelle Rhee and others leading this effort have:
• Used standardized tests like the MAP to put some students on the path to APP and others into the School to Prison Pipeline
• Created tracking systems that reinforce institutionalized racism
• Limited creativity in the classroom by forcing all teachers to use the same narrow approaches for the diverse needs of students
• Blamed public school teachers for society’s poverty gap
• Ignored the fact that POVERTY and RACISM block achievement
• Made school boring by pushing for rote memorization
• Increased stress on students by heaping on homework and inflaming a competitive environment
• Increased discipline and harassment of students of color
• Underfunded public schools and replaced them with privately-run charter schools that better serve the privileged
• Closed neighborhood schools and gutted communities
• White-washed curriculum and removed culturally-relevant material from the classroom
• Pushed for Common CORE Standards to sell more textbooks

Here is the revised text for the original flyer:

Creativity Not Control!
Teachers across the city have refused to administer the MAP Test. MAP testing should end because:
• Teachers don’t know what the test covers and get no results back. The test has NO RELATION to what is being taught.
• SPS administrators admitted that the margin of error for the test is greater than expected gains. The test proves nothing.
• Ninth-graders cannot afford to lose classroom time.
• Scores are low because students don’t take the test seriously.
• Superintendent Maria Goodloe-Johnson was on the board of the corporation that sells the exam – a clear conflict of interest.
• No standardized test accurately reflects a student’s creativity and full potential.
What can YOU do?
Parent/Guardians:
• Tell your teachers, principal, PTSA, and SPS you oppose the MAP
• Opt your student out of the MAP. It is NOT REQUIRED
Students:
• Let your teachers, family and friends know you oppose the MAP
• After family discussions, refuse to take the MAP
• Answer EVERY QUESTION ON THE MAP WITH A “C” for CREATIVITY. If enough students do this, it will invalidate the data and make it less likely to be used to control teachers and curriculum.
Teachers:
• Unite with your colleagues and refuse to give the test.
• Support students opting out or answering “C” for CREATIVITY.
